[1807.01318] The gravitational mass of Proxima Centauri

Microlensing events occurred in 2014 and 2016 with impact parameters, the closest approach of Proxima Cen to the background star, of 1\farcs6 $\pm$ 0\farcs1 and 0\farcs5 $\pm$ 0\farcs1, respectively. Accurate measurements of the positions of the background stars during the last two years have been obtained with HST/WFC3, and with VLT/SPHERE from the ground.

Proxima Centauri b: Terrestrial or Neptunian?

By taking advantage of the close passage of Proxima Cen in front of two background stars, it is possible to measure the astrometric shift caused by the microlensing effect due to these close encounters and estimate the gravitational mass of the lens (Proxima Cen). Microlensing events occurred in 2014 and 2016 with impact parameters, the closest approach of Proxima Cen to the background star, of 1.6 ± …

Proxima Centauri – Wikipedia

Proxima Centauri (from Latin, meaning ‘nearest [star] of Centaurus’), or Alpha Centauri C, is a red dwarf, a small low-mass star, about 4.244 light-years (1.301 …

The mass of Proxima Centauri determined – Sphere/vlt

The mass of Proxima Centauri determined by SPHERE. Proxima Centauri, our closest stellar neighbor, is the subject of many attentions since the discovery of a telluric planet in 2016 by the technique of radial velocity. This planet would have a mass of …

Microlensing Events by Proxima Centauri in 2014 and 2016

3. The Proxima Centauri Events of 2014 and 2016 Of the events that we have found will occur in the next few years, one of the most interesting is the close passage of Proxima Centauri in front of a pair of background source stars of V magnitudes 20 and 19.5, separated by 4′′.3. Closest approaches will occur in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

Gravitational Lensing in Proxima Planet Hunt – Centauri Dreams

Because Proxima Centauri is the closest star to our Sun (distance, 4.2 light-years), its angular motion across the sky is relatively fast compared to much more distant background stars. This means that in 2014 and 2016 Proxima Centauri will pass in front of two background stars that are along its path.
